After spending over a decade on death row for a crime he says he didn’t commit, a Houston man is free thanks to a re-trial and lack of evidence against him.
Alfred Dwayne Brown walked out out of Harris County Monday night a free man. He said, “Everything happens for a reason but I’m good. My family alright. If they’re alright, I’m alright.”
Brown spent the last decade for killing Houston police officer Charles Clark in 2003. Granted a new trial for his case, the District Attorney discovered there isn’t enough evidence against Brown to win the case beyond a reasonable doubt.
Devon Anderson, the Harris County District Attorney, made the announce of the lack of evidence to convict for capital murder on Monday, when Brown was set free.
In 2005, Brown was convicted of killing Officer Clark during a robbery attempt at a check cashing place. During the fire fight, Alfredia Jones, a store clerk, was also killed.
[ADSENSE2]Always Claimed Innocents
Brown has always contended he wasn’t at the scene of the murders. In 2013, there were phone records discovered in a police investigator’s home garage. The discovery of these records let to Brown’s new trial and eventually the discovery there wasn’t enough evidence to convict him.
“He got a new trial,” said Anderson.
“We re-interviewed all the witnesses. We looked at all the evidence, and we came up short. I don’t know how else to say it. We can’t prove this case beyond a reasonable doubt.”
Brown was released on Monday at around 7:30pm.
“I went in an innocent man and I came out an innocent man,” said Brown.
However, Brown also said he no bitterness towards the police officers and prosecutors working his case.
“They were doing what they thought was right, even though it was wrong. I cant blame them for that,” said Brown.
Here is Brown and I differ. I will never understand this forgiving attitude of the black community when the police are CLEARLY hiding information, lying and prosecuting us with prejudice on a regular basis.
How do we ever intend to make a difference if we don’t bring down the full weight of judicial system and hopefully the Department of Justice on these police officers, investigators and precincts if we don’t do our part and fight back?
Forgiveness in the eyes of the Lord is great, but in the eyes of the legal system is just asking for more of this to happen to our community in the future by allowing these crooked, lying police officers to continue doing their dirt on the job.
