*UPDATE: In Riviera Beach, Florida the name of “Old Dixie Highway” changed to “President Barack Obama Highway.” And you can see it went down well! See the video below…
Riveria Beach, like everywhere in the USA, has a history of heavy segregation. Part of that past was evident in various street and place names around the city. However over time these names have been being replaced in an effort to help the city move forward.
The most recent change seems to be welecomed by locals.
Old Dixie Highway has been changed to Barack Obama Highway within the city limit.
One resident, Mary Brabham, said of the change:
“It’s time to let the past be the past. We are moving forward and do things not for one, but for all.”
And Mayor Thomas Masters said:
“We are stepping up to a new day, a new era, and replacing old Dixie with Barack Obama who represents change.”
The city is also the only city in the country where roads named after Dr Martin Luther King Jr and President Barack Obama meet at a corner.
What do you think of this?
