Newsflash, there are some very racist and ignorant people in the world. The latest display of this comes from a South Carolina High School where racist vandalized a large rock on the first day of Black History Month.
South Pointe High School in Rock Hill, South Carolina was the scene of the crime. School officials noticed the graffiti on the rock Monday morning and figure the damage was done on the previous Sunday. The message was clear, but there are no suspects in the case.
Photos of the large rock were taken and distributed around social media outlets, as you can see pictured here. The words “Happy Ni**er Month” were written on the rock in white spray paint. It was signed by the KKK, which doesn’t necessarily mean the hate group was involved, but they were referenced.
“It was discovered yesterday morning, and since then, it’s been eradicated,” a school staffer told Raw Story. “People are still calling because it was posted. Whoever did it, took a picture.”
The school acted promptly to remove the hate filled graffitti by painting over it. It was all they could do in an effort to contain the hurt and frustration that would surely come from this event.
Many black people in this country are not surprised by this. Whites have for decades displayed their displeasure for Black History Month. Which many in the black community have clearly responded if history being taught inside of the classrooms were not so unfairly tilted towards loving, honoring and respecting white culture, there wouldn’t be a need for Black History Month, but it isn’t.
The bottom line is black people need to become more cognizant and aware of their history. It is the shoulders of these giants in the past we stand. It is our duty and responsibility to not only know their efforts, but to be inspired by them to continue building the community we can all be proud.
SOUND OFF: What are your thoughts on the racist graffiti and your thoughts on black history month in general? Is it still a good idea?
