What Happened to Judge who Asked Rape Victim: “Why Couldn’t You Just Keep Your Knees Together?”

In 2016 women are still minimized to objects of affection whose sole purpose is to please men. Canadian Judge Robin Camp asked a rape victim, “Why couldn’t you just keep your knees together?” while presiding over her rape case in court. But it gets a lot worse, he also asked her why she didn’t just “skew her pelvis” to prevent penetration.

The victim was 19 years old during the trial, she was bent over a sink during a house party and raped.

Camp recently had to discuss his statement in front of the Canadian Judicial Council. His lawyer said he asked those question to gain clarity, to understand if the incident could have been prevented.

I have an answer, it could have been prevented if the rapist walked away once she said no.

Camp apologized to the victim explaining that most of his judicial experience was with contracts and bankruptcy.

Also stating that he was from South Africa and had minimal knowledge of Canadian law.

Okay so he doesn’t know why the victim couldn’t simply prevent the attack from happening but his remarks throughout the trial made it seem as though he was ok with what her attacker did. Other comments he made during the trial where, “Young wom[e]n want to have sex, particularly if they’re drunk.” He went on to say, “Some sex and pain sometimes go together…that’s not necessarily a bad thing.”

Then after acquitting her attacker, he gave him this advice:

“I want you to tell your friends, your male friends, that they have to be far more gentle with women. They have to be far more patient. And they have to be very careful. To protect themselves, they have to be very careful.” So basically the next time you decide to rape someone be more gentle.

Thankfully, the verdict was overturned on appeal and Judge Robin Camp can officially be referred to as former Judge Camp. On November 29 of this year the Canadian Judicial Council unanimously decided to remove Camp from the bench.
