CBS Television Double Standard: Sports analyst, Greg Anthony, suspended indefinitely after arrest for soliciting prostitution

CBS Sports Television moved swiftly to mitigate the fall out of former NBA basketball player and current CBS sports analyst Greg Anthony, after his arrest on Friday for soliciting prostitution.

CBS television announced on Saturday, Anthony’s indefinite suspension with this statement. “Greg Anthony will not be working again with CBS this season.”

No further comment was offered and in tandem, Turner Sports suspended the long term NBA analyst from his studio position. Anthony, has a lot to reflect on this these days, including his rise to professional sports and television fame.

Anthony, married father of four, enjoyed a successful college career at UNLV with a NCAA championship in 1990 and a professional career in the NBA with six different teams. He is often described by his colleagues as having a very high basketball IQ.

It made perfect sense after retiring in 2002, Anthony pursued a sports analyst position first with ESPN and ABC covering NBA basketball and then onto CBS Sports in 2008 covering college basketball as a studio analyst. In 2014, Anthony assumed the role of lead commentator, yet another promotion.

In stark contrast, Marvin Philip Aufrichtig, also known as the lovable television sports analyst Marv Albert, was destined for television broadcasting from the beginning. He spent 37 years announcing for the New York Knicks, starting out as a ball boy. Marvin, didn’t have one lick of athleticism or professional sports experience, but he had the voice.

Marv, also had an appetite for sexual deviance. In 1997, the sports analyst went on trial for sexual assault amid allegations of forcible sodomy and biting. Yes, you read it right. At the time, Marv Albert worked for NBC Sports, broadcasting NBA games. NBC, promptly fired Marv and then hired him back less than two years later.

The message was clear. Our facade of indignation was for the benefit of the viewers and commercial advertisers. After all, Marv was fired after he plead guilty to the charges, and the network choose to stick by him.

The statement CBS made in regards to CBS’s and sports analyst Greg Anthony continued relationship is familiar in all its righteousness.

Is this fair or no? Greg deserves backlash for his indiscretion, yes but to what end?
