Sandra Bland’s death in police custody was yet another wrongful and pointless death at the hands of those supposed to serve and protect us. However you look at it, she simply should not be dead.
And the fight between lawyers, the family and the state has been very public, I can imagine it’s been a very exhausting year for the family.
However, now, news is coming in that the family have settled. They have settled for $1.9m in the wrongful death lawsuit.
This obviously has left a lot of people not feeling so great, in a settlement, justice is rarely served!
A small glimmer of goodness comes with the news that the settlement will also comes with compensation for the family but also many changes to Waller County, Texas jail procedures.
CNN reported that:
Bland family attorney Cannon Lambert said the jail procedure changes include:
— Using automated electronic sensors to ensure timely cell checks
— Providing an on-duty staff nurse or emergency medical technician for all shifts
— Providing continuing education for jailer screening
The full settlement is confidential until details are ironed out but it seems that Bland’s mother, Geneva Reed-Veal, is very happy. She issued a statement saying:
“Right now my emotion is joy, pure joy,… There’s a sense of God’s justice for me.”
What do you think?
