It isn’t shocking that Germany has opened their colleges and universities to international students, including those in the USA. What is shocking is the reason they are quoted as to why?

Many of us have learned the hard way that college cost can put you in the poor house.

With the average cost of student loan debt in this country just below ,000 and rising, it is easy to see why someone my be a bit cash strapped after college.

This isn’t to mention the many universities in this country that start at $30,o00 per year, so there are a great many of us who have much more debt than this on the books.

Why Free in Germany?

From the Daily Kos: In explaining why Germany made this move, Dorothee Stapelfeldt, a Hamburg senator, called tuition fees “unjust” and added that “they discourage young people who do not have a traditional academic family background from taking up study. It is a core task of politics to ensure that young women and men can study with a high quality standard free of charge in Germany.”

Unjust….from a Senator, this is what makes this announcement so shocking to those in the United States. This political leader actually sounds like someone who is fighting for the people…but not only for the people in her constituency. She is fighting for people all over the world that want a better chance at bettering themselves and their family.

As if that wasn’t enough, it appears that students get additional benefits as well in Germany. They are afforded discounts for food, clothing and events, as well as inexpensive or even free transportation.

Would go or allow your child to go to college for free in Germany?

I respect the cultural decision you have to make in order to allow an African American child to travel across the world to attend college. But think of the international experience, connections and opportunities they will make while there.
