The trial of the first officer to be trialled in the murder of Freddie Gray ended in a hung jury yesterday (Wednesday 17th December) sparking worry for the prosecutors case against the other officers.
After this mistrial it is unclear if officer William Porter will face trial again.
Porter was being tried for manslaughter, assault, misconduct in office and reckless endangerment. The case was reportedly concentrating on what he did not do rather than what he did do which involved failing to get medical help for Freddie.
Yesterday was the third day the jury had been trying to decide, the five men and seven women became deadlocked on Tuesday and the judge urged them to keep going.
All the while a small protest was building outside the courthouse with chants of “send those killer cops to jail.”.
Prosecutors had planned to use Porter’s testimony against two other officers in the case, obviously that is now up in the air.
Porter is one of two black officers accused in the case.
The implications of this mistrial obviously throw worry to anyone interested and leave us wondering if all the officers will get off more lightly than they should.
