Former NFL Player Worth $40 Million Files for Bankruptcy, Owes Almost $5 Million To Various Creditors Including His Own Mom

Clinton Portis has reportedly been dealing with money issues for quite some time now. Last fall, a Las Vegas casino sued him after he failed to pay back more than $10,000 worth of debt. But it sounds like that 10 grand was (and still is) the least of his problems.

According to Deadspin, the former NFL running back—who made more than $40 million during his playing days—has filed for bankruptcy and owes about 20 creditors almost $5 million. The exact amount of his debt is $4,857,659.50, and he owes everyone from the IRS ($390,000) to the Borgata Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City, N.J. ($170,000) to his own mother ($500,000) at this time. There is even a Verizon phone bill for less than $1,000 towards the end of his bankruptcy filing.

The problem for Portis, outside of the obvious debt, is that it doesn’t sound like he’s got much money coming in at the moment. He reportedly collects about $3,500 every month in disability payments from the NFL, and he makes $1,000 per month working as a sideline reporter during NFL games.

These stories are always sad, but unfortunately, there’s nothing new about former NFL players going broke.
