Today when they should be celebrating his 24th birthday, Xavier Joy’s family is instead planning his funeral. Joy played football at Morehouse College and came home to work disadvantage youth. His family said he passionate about helping the youth. He taught at Chicago Public Schools and Evanston Public Schools.

While walking home from work just two blocks away from home Joy was shot and killed. His mother heard the gunshots from their home. A family friend said he’s shocked because they grew up in the area, so it’s hard to fathom way someone would take his life.

The authorities have no motive but Joy was talking to his girlfriend before he was shot and his phone was missing. His family is assuming he was killed for his iPhone 7.

“He’s always been a good boy, always been smart, always been caring,” his visibly distraught grandmother told reporters.

The summer blues continue in the city of Chicago. When will we start valuing life over things? I’m sure Joy would have happily given up his phone. A mentor and positive role model gone for no reason.

There were cameras in the area where Xavier Joy was killed, the family hoping the police will find some leads from the footage.
