Former Black Panther Creates a Generous Opportunity for a Fresh Start for Ex-Convicts

The opening of West Oakland Farms is a project created by Elaine Brown. She is the former Chairperson of the Black Panther Party which aimed to achieve equality across all colors and genders. She played a pivotal role in the strides made by the Black Panther Party. She is still working toward bettering the lives of people of color.

The West Oakland farm in California currently has 40 soil beds with corn, kale, peppers, tomatoes and more. The workers hired to take care of the land are ex-prisoners and they are given $20 an hour for this and they do this job on a rotation basis.

Brown said that this is just the start. In the future, she plans to put a juice bar, grocery store, tech design space, fitness center and affordable housing. This and its future expansion would be under the project of Oakland & the World Enterprises, a non-profit organization that Brown founded in 2015. As the farm gets bigger and expands, more jobs will be available for ex-offenders who are poor and finds it hard to get a job because of their record.
