Outright and open racism seems to be the new fashion trend these days with Trump running on a campaign that made hate ok and the US and UK seeing a huge rise in reported hate crime since the election of Trump and Brexit respectively. Add in the growth of the far-right across Europe and it seems that hate and racism are almost openly acceptable again.
Luckily some moves are being made. Whilst in USA the KKK seem to be able to operate in plain sight (and in all levels of government and business) the UK has actually taken some steps to label one hate group exactly what it is!
The British Home Secretary has a approved a motion to to brand the neo-Nazi group National Action as “racist, anti-Semitic, and homophobic” and banning membership for the group. Anyone who joins will be committing an offence from friday. The group is banned under terrorism laws.
The nationalist youth movement showed admiration for Thomas Mair. He is a terrorist who killed MP Jo Cox during the run up to Brexit. They have also embodied language and retweeted words right out of Hitler and his party.
Home Secretary Amber Rudd said:
“As Home Secretary, I am clear that the safety and security of our families, communities, and country comes first.
“National Action is a racist, anti-Semitic, and homophobic organisation which stirs up hatred, glorifies violence, and promotes a vile ideology, and I will not stand for it. It has absolutely no place in a Britain that works for everyone.”
This is the first such move in the UK to label a neo-Nazi group as such.
The independent reported:
Proscription makes it a criminal offence to belong to the organisation, arrange meetings in support of the group, or wear clothing or carry articles in public which appear to promote it.
Proscription offences carry a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and an unlimited fine. Groups can also have their assets frozen.
Under the Terrorism Act 2000, the home secretary can proscribe any organisation she believes to be “concerned in terrorism”.
There are currently 70 organisations proscribed under the act. The majority are Islamist groups. A further 14 organisations in Northern Ireland were proscribed under previous legislation.
National Action has tweeted material appearing to glorify terrorist Mair in the past, including a photograph of the killer accompanied by the message: “VoteLeave, don’t let this man’s sacrifice go in vain. Jo Cox would have filled Yorkshire with more subhumans!”
