Since Raleigh Little Theatre’s first production of Cinderella in 1984, this year was the first time the leading lady was played by a black woman, Ms. Destiny Diamond McNeil. The “Cinderella” production started December 4th and concluded December 20th. McNeil is a 22 year-old senior at North Carolina University. She was excited about the opportunity and hopes she can inspire other African American girls to follow in her footsteps.
According to the Huffington Post, McNeil described this opportunity as a “dream come true”. The university and community have been very supportive, they have receive nothing but positive feedback. It’s amazing to know she was picked solely based on her talent.
Even in 2015 representation is still important. McNeil said she is inspired by Misty Copeland, now she can inspire young African American girls as Misty Copeland inspired her. After graduation McNeil plans to attend graduate for musical theater. Her goal is to one day be on Broadway! New York make way for Destiny!
