According to a Tennessee sheriff, Beyoncé is the only reasonable explanation for why police officers and other members of law enforcement have recently been attacked. During her Superbowl halftime performance, she made references to the Black Panthers, Malcolm X, and Black Lives Matter, all powerful topics. She also stresses empowerment and brings awareness on the injustices in the black community in the music video for her most recent song, Formation.
Some might see her “attacks” on police officers as a complete misuse of celebrity power, but the topics she is pointing out are completely relevant and very under-stressed in society. The Black Lives Matter movement is probably the most well known modern black empowerment movement and was sparked shortly after people noticed a pattern off events in which Caucasian police officers were attacking African American citizens with physical force as well as weaponry.
Beyoncé might have touched on these topics in her performance and music videos, but the Tennessee Sheriff took her awareness attempts one step too far by blaming them for the most recent attacks on police officers. The attacks were the effects of problems that were already in existence in our society and not of something that a celebrity brought needed awareness to.
