For years, the Academy has been selective in what roles they’ve allowed actors of African decent to be nominated for. From Denzel in Training Day and Lupita in 12 Years A Slave to Hallie in Monster’s Ball, every actor that’s won an Oscar has played a slave or a character that isn’t morally sound. The Oscars is a reflection of the nation as a whole, as white institutions are inclusive in their power. There’s honestly no reason to watch the Oscars this Sunday. Well, aside from what Chris rock will have to say in his monologue.
Love him or hate him, Chris Rock is a comedic genius. He’s built a legendary career for himself by giving a unique take on social and racial inequities for black people in America. The award shows that he’s hosted have always been memorable. Why would we want him to not host the Oscars?
This Black History Month, we’ve had Beyoncé and Kendrick Lamar make controversial statements that’s resonated around the world. Why would we expect less from Chris Rock? Remember how he opened his monologue at the 2005 Oscars?
“We have what, four black nominees tonight. It’s great! It’s kinda like the Def Oscar Jam tonight!”
Expect for Chris Rock to create a legendary moment on Sunday at the Oscars (8:30 EST/7:30 CST on ABC). Even if you don’t watch it, just know that we here at Urban Intellectuals will have full coverage for you to enjoy!
