2016 turns out to be a great year for a 38 year old ex-convict, Toron Larkins from St. Petersburg. A man who had a rough past but a bright future.
After serving 1 year and 6 months in prison in 2011 for selling crack cocaine, Larkins was determined to turn his life around by inventing a child tracker, but this device is made especially for autistic children who are prone to wonder around by themselves
He hopes by inventing this, he could help parents with an autistic child to worry less about their child getting lost and seek redemption for what he has done in the past. Many non violent criminals tend to repeat their offences due to the fact that people who has a criminal record has lesser opportunities to get a job after their first offence. All that time being locked away has made Larkins has decided to take a different path as he does not to live a life of crime.
The many years he spent in prison has changed his life for the better, said Larkins.
He has gone from being a criminal to pursuing a bachelor’s in business course and got married at the end.
The father of 6 children, stumble upon the idea after one of his brothers son got lost when returning home from school and it took them a few hours before they found him.
His invention is called the Track-N-Find GPS Undergarments for Kids which is created using a tracking device which is placed in the zipper pocket of the child’s undershirt and can be controlled by a smartphone app so the parents can monitor the whereabouts of their children.
Even though a GPR tracking device that tracks a child’s whereabouts is not something new and according to Google there are a dozen or so of these products out there. But even so, Larkins is optimistic that the patent for his product will come through.
Well what made his idea unique and ingenious is that the device is hidden in clothing rather than a bracelet or back pack that can be worn and carried around by the child but can also be easily removed and lost and in case the child is being kidnapped, the perpetrator could never had guessed that the child’s clothing contains a tracking device.
Larkins hopes that a keen investor could step in and help launch his product into the next level, given the amount of money and time he has put in to his invention already.
Larkins target market are parents with autistic children because is it common for autistic children to wander off by themselves even when unattended for a brief moment.
Nearly one autistic child gets lost per day, estimated by the American Academy of Pediatrics. And the amount is likely to rise as the number of autistic born child has increased lately.
Autistic child are attracted to life threatening environments such as water bodies of water and roads which is a tragedy waiting to happen.
People who has a criminal record often find themselves having trouble getting a decent job, a house and education opportunities and they would have no choice but to revert to being a criminal once again.
It is not unusual for ex convicts to discover their way in life even when they had serve some time in prison. But for Larkins, he is determined to build himself a better life and swears that he will never revert to a criminal life ever again. He is blessed to have married his long time friend, being able to be given the opportunity to enroll in a business degree course and got to develop his invention.
