Ahead of the opening of the new National Museum of African-American History and Culture, former professional basketball player, Micheal Jordan has donated $5 million to the museum, according to a statement released on August 8th.

In addition to the monetary gift, Jordan also donated some items from his personal collection to the museum.

These gifts include a jersey that he wore during the 1996 NBA finals. Jordan is known for his 15 record breaking seasons in the NBA including 6 NBA championships with the Chicago Bulls. Today he is the owner of the Charlotte Hornets.

The gift from Jordan is the largest that the museum has received from a sports figure. In recognition of the gift, the National Museum of African-American History and Culture is naming one of its halls after the sports star.

This hall will feature artifacts and stories of 17 prominent, game changing African-Amercan sports stars including Jordan, track and field star Jesse Owens, and tennis player Althea Gibson.

The museum, which is the 19th National Museum, will open on September 24th, following a special cermony officiated by President Barack Obama.

The National Museum of African-Amercan History and Culture is intended to highlight the contributions that African-Americans have made to US history and culture.

Jordan’s gift will allow the museum to help highlight the way athletes have helped by breaking barriers and paving the way for future generations.
