Disney Displays First Gay Kiss In Children’s Cartoon

As Civil Rights for the LGBT community has become a hot topic in the political sphere, LGBT centric stories have started to enter the media sphere. Moonlight won big at the Oscar’s last Sunday, signaling a change in the traditional media paradigm. You could say that acclaimed director Lee Daniels pioneered this revolution of modern day LGBT media projects. Just recently, Disney decided to make a bold move by having their first homosexual scene in one of their shows.

Disney has been flirting with the idea of introducing gay characters into their cinema for the past few years. Just recently, they disclosed that their new ideation of Beauty & The Beast will feature their “first exclusive gay moment”, where a man servant explores their sexuality. Also, in an episode of Star & The Forces of Evil, you can see two men kissing as main character Star and her friend Marco attend a concert. The video is below.

For the most part, social media has been rather receptive of the scene in the show. Social media users have either applauded Disney for making this move or shown general disregard to what’s done in a children’s cartoon. However, there’s also been outraged from concerned parents that fear this is indoctrinating their kids to the LGBT lifestyle. Personally, I straddle the fence. Homosexuals people exist in the world. No matter how much you want to hide it, it won’t make it less true! However, at the same time, any display of sexuality is rather risqué for media that is consumed by young children. Disney and other companies like it such as Cartoon Network (Turner Broadcasting) have shown rather mature scenes in their shows that can be viewed as inappropriate because of  the actions relative to the age of the viewers. This issue is up to interpretation and is great to spark a discussion.
