While the Oscars may not be as white as they were last year it seems that the last decade has not been the best for black directors with at least one major studio (yes, Disney) not hiring one black director for any of it’s movies in the last decade!
Atlanta Black Star reported:
Researchers at USC’s Annenberg’s Media, Diversity & Social Change Initiative released a study Monday, Jan. 30, that reviewed 1,000 of the top-grossing films from 2007 to 2016. The report, covering 100 movies per year, revealed the lack of progress being made behind the scenes with nonwhite and female directors. With zero Black directors, Walt Disney Studios has room for the most improvement.
Disney are making some amends but it’s been a really poor legacy. In 2018 the studio has two movies helmed by black directors coming to the big screen. Ava DuVernay is directing “A Wrinkle In Time” and Ryan Coogler is directing “Black Panther,”, which is shaping up with an amazing cast….. But we can’t forget their poor legacy and honestly I feel pushing for small black owned and runs studios to push forward black projects may be a better long term plan!
