At New York Fashion Week, a designer decided to make a statement regarding police brutality and racism when it comes to black people in this country. During the prominent fashion show, the designer showed a powerful 10 minute video highlighting many incidents of police brutality and the killing of unarmed black people over the past few years.
A stunning way to begin a fashion show, but when your clothing is meant to highlight this moment, this period of time where black people are being treated unfairly by the police and the judicial system, something had to be done.
Kerby Jean-Raymond, age 28, is the designer behind the controversial clothing line and video prior to the fashion show. He says the video wasn’t meant for shock value, but something more.
He explains.
‘It’s not for shock value, but it’s what’s going to make you think about this…after you go to three shows,’ he added. ‘What’s going to make you think about this again at 11 when you’re done for the day? That’s what it’s about.’
A fashion show designed to make people think about police brutality later in your day is a tall order.
[ADSENSE2]According to the Huffington Post, the video has 16 different cases of police brutality involved in the clip. As you know, many of the incidences was caught on camera, but didn’t stop the judicial system from siding with the officers in the majority of cases where the unarmed, black person died.
They shocking footage was created with disgust, thoughtfulness, and silence. It was a very powerful scene according to those there.
‘I wasn’t even going to show the collection; I wasn’t 100 per cent sold on showing the collection,’ he explained. ‘I wanted to just show the video, open the doors and let everyone out.’
Here is a clip of the 10 minute video to give you an idea of type of images shown.
