At just 13 years old Za’Khari Waddy, who attends Tabb Middle School in Yorktown, Virginia, has been dealing with unacceptable racism from fello white students.
After frustration it seems he took advice from his mother and published an open letter to his school. The letter really is heartbreaking. It’s beyond sad that in this day and age a young man should be at the end of such abuse. However the stand and attention he is bringing to the issue will hopefully make some waves and get those responsible to stand up for their actions and hopefully see their wrong.
Za’Khari, who turns 14 in December and is in the 8th grade, is a a scholar-athlete, he is on the honor roll and is a leads on his football team. An expemplory student. However he has had to deal with racism for years, he says.
He also says the school has not taken his complaints seriously.
His mother has also visited the school principle over the incidents which she says has crushed her son’s spirit. She says the school only ever said they would look into it.
Disgraceful!!
So, we think, it’s important his letter goes far and wide and the school has to make a response and deal with this terrible situation.
Here is the letter:
To Whom It May Concern:
Yesterday on the football bus coming from our football game a kid … started saying racist things to me. He then started saying he does not like blacks and he told me 200 years ago my ancestors hung from a tree and after he said that I should I hang from a tree.
That made me super mad, so in the locker room I told him not to call me n—-r or that I should be hung on a tree.
The coaches took me away from the kid because I was really mad and they think I was going to fight him but I want someone to do something about it because I’m tired of boys messing with me because of my skin. I’m at my boiling point with this. Please do something about this because when I bring it to the office/principle you do nothing about it and I’m tired of the racism.
