We may have another Edward Snowden on our hands. Although the FBI and NSA kept it under wraps while they conducted their investigation an employee stole classified information from the National Security Association this summer. Harold Thomas Martin, 51, of Glen Burnie, MD has been in custody since August 2016 when paper and electronic documents were found at his residence.
According to Wall Street Journal the FBI has charged Martin, a government contractor, with stealing classified secrets. Suspicions rose when an entity referring to itself as Shadow Broker claimed they had NSA spying tool for sell. This tip led them to Martin. Initially Martin denied having classified documents but once presented with evidence found in his home, he admitted to taking the documents.
Although he does have clearance to access NSA documents he does have clearance to remove them from NSA permissions.
Both Martin and Snowden were both contractors from Booz Allen, a company that works with NSA. NSA handles some of our countries most top secret spy technology and this is the second time in less than 5 years top secret intelligence has been stolen from them.
The FBI has yet to discover a motive behind Martin’s actions. He admits he took them has not eluded to why. Should we be nervous?
