If you visit the city of Chicago, there is no doubt you will notice the growing population of homeless people sleeping outdoors. It is a sad sight to see that is compounded when you consider the frigid Chicago winters. How are they able to endure?

Thanks to Chance The Rapper, many of hip hop star’s Chicago kinfolk won’t have to endure the cold winters without some help. He was able to lend his star power to a positive cause that raised $60,000 to help clothe the homeless….in just 10 days.

Chance The rapperBuilding off the anticipation for his third solo mixtape and current star power, Chance The Rapper hooked up with a Detroit-based nonprofit organization, The Empowerment Plan, to tackle the issue with his Warmest Winter initiative.

The plan is to distribute EMPWR coats to the homeless, but these are not your ordinary coats or jackets. These coats double as sleeping bags, so not only will the person have a warm jacket to use during the day, but a sleeping bag to rest at night. According to the nonprofit organization, every 1,000 coats distributed saves 14 lives.

After announcing the fundraiser, it took Chance The Rapper just 10 short days to hit $60,000 in donations from his fans, friends and supporters.
Honestly, I don’t know much about his music, his career, but I love and admire his compassion for people. Homelessness is a growing epidemic in this country. We love to ignore and step over them, but we must realize a few of us and our family members are a few tough breaks from being on the street.

Perhaps we should be more compassionate.
