Common & John Legend Oscar Speech Calls Out Racial Inequalities In America & Makes Slavery Reference (VIDEO)

Oscar award winning speeches are typically a drove of thank yous and ‘I could have never been here withouts’, but thanks to the hip hop legend and soul singer combo of Common and John Legend we have something powerful to talk about today following the Oscars.

These two won their very first Oscar for the Best Original Song “Glory” on the Selma soundtrack. It is a glorious song that many enjoy, but their acceptance speech was the talk of last nights Oscars.

john_legend_common_oscarsCommon spoke about the visiting the very bridge Dr. King lead the historical march over with John Legend and performing the song “Glory”. He spoke about the bridge as a representation for hope, prosperity and love of all mankind.

The positive discussion didn’t stop there. John Legend continued.

Legend followed Common by referencing slaver and the fact that more black men are under correctional control today than they were during slavery in the 1850s. Drawing a powerful realization to the struggles the black community still face, while shinning a light on the legendary work of Michelle Alexander’s book “The New Jim Crow.”

“We live in the most incarcerated country in the world,” Legend said. “There are more black men under correctional control today than there were under slavery in 1850.”
