College Students Are Getting Arrested Because of App “Yeti Campus Stories”

In this technology forward world, thousands of new apps pop up every day. However, none are as controversial or impactful as “Yeti Campus Stories”.

Known as the college version of Snapchat, Yeti has a smooth interface that doesn’t require you to create a profile. Instead, you turn on the location feature on your device, pick a college close to you and see the different happenings around campus.

Although the app seems to be virtually harmless, the app has caused problems that’ve led to arrest on campus’s nationwide. Now, the app has reached FAMU and Fort Valley State University, two HBCU’s located in the southern region of the United States. Fort Valley State University’s interim president Dr. Jessica Bailey issued a statement denouncing the app only a couple of weeks after it’s debut on campus.

In the statement, Dr. Baily said, “The university has received numerous complaints from students, parents and other members of the university community about degrading, insulting and mean-spirited comments posted by FVSU students on the social media web site, Yeti.

Some comments constitute harassment and cyber bullying and express an attitude of discrimination that is in total opposition to Fort Valley State University policies, and may be violations of state and federal law.”

Many college students are naïve to the dangers of using Yeti negatively. After the statement released by Dr. Bailey, I did my own research into the app and found some staggering facts that shows that the app, which won’t be around long in it’s current state, can further fracture the already volatile social atmosphere of colleges nationwide. However, can it be used positively? I tackle the subject in my podcast The Randall Barnes Experience, which you can hear below.
