“Books are better than television, the internet, or the computer for educating and maintaining freedom. Books matter because they state ideas and then attempt to thoroughly prove them.”
-Oliver DeMille
I wish I could go up on the tallest building in America with a megaphone and shout this message to the black people in America: we need our own international mass media outlets! How else will we be able to spout our philosophies and opinions without the threat of being dismissed and ruining our careers? How else will we be able to battle against conservative and outwardly racist media powerhouses like Fox News who love to spin stories and make it seem like you’re a “reverse racist” (whatever that’s supposed to mean)? Ask Toure.
The author and popular media personality for MSNBC is under fire for what some are calling “anti-sematic” comments. Fellow journalist and Ebony Magazine columnist Zerlina Maxwell wrote an article about white privilege that Toure took a liking to. He tweeted her saying that he enjoyed the article and, conveniently, a conservative Twitter profile made a comment about how his family survived the Holocaust and made a way for themselves in the U.S.
The power of whiteness: RT @hope_and_chains: My family survived a concentration camp, came to the US w/ nothing, LEGALLY, and made it work.
— Touré (@Toure) May 23, 2014
Toure simply responded by saying, “The power of whiteness.” His comment wasn’t offensive or worth flying off the handle about at all. But, it was enough to give the conservative faction of Twitter ammo to take his comments out of context. They started posting sarcastic tweets about the severity of the Holocaust. Several journalists took to their websites to further throw Toure under the bus. He hasn’t tweeted since that incident four days ago.
I still can’t believe Touré basically told someone to check their Nazi concentration camp survivor privilege.

Now, all of us are predicting that Toure’s days at MSNBC are numbered. No one that has made disparaging comments about the Jewish or LBGT community has been seen in the public eye on a mass scale. They always go on a war path to make sure the career that the person had beforehand is thoroughly trashed and destroyed. These groups clearly show us the epitome of unity and mobilization for a common cause. Their record is spotless!
Meanwhile, Rush Limbaugh has made his career off of saying inflammatory things about the African-American community and all he’s lost is some advertisers. Rush is still one of the top personalities in radio today. Look at his numbers! Don Imus took a brief break from the media scene before coming back unscathed after calling the Rudgers basketball team “nappy headed hoes”. Paula Dean had that fiasco last year and she’s back and bigger than ever! Don’t you see something wrong with this picture?
Ownership is key! When you’re in control, you can virtually do whatever you want. Let’s be clear, the reason why Toure’s job security is an issue is because he works at Jewish run MSNBC. What if we had our own network of that same magnitude? We can even get our heads out the sky and think about the damage we could cause if we had bloggers and journalists to go to war for our cause. What if we had twenty Urban Intellectual style websites speaking up and defending Toure?
After you read this article, search Toure’s name on Google and look at “News for Toure”. If the soccer prodigy Yaya Toure hasn’t railroaded you, you’ll see several articles from big name publications like the Washington Post further taking the journalist Toure’s tweet out of context. If anybody is wondering why we think the clock is ticking on Toure, this is it. They’re putting pressure on MSNBC to make a move!
Let this be a lesson to all of us. It’s time to stop sitting around watching like helpless spectators and use the internet as our tool of leverage. Support websites that are trying to bring perspective to topics and issues like Urban Intellectuals. Let’s dialogue about ways to solve this issue of ours. We may not have an official think tank but we do have an open forum where we can express our frustrations and brainstorm on ideas. Let me ask this question: if Toure indeed gets dismissed from MSNBC for this ordeal, what are we going to do?
