Make America Great Again is a quote that may very well stand the test of time. It’s short, catchy, and frankly powerful when taken from a particular perspective. It stirs the nation’s collective soul and serves as a rallying cry for many people in all walks of life.
The problem with such a quote is that its meaning can change depending on who’s using it. And since it happens to be Donald Trump’s campaign slogan, these four little words have been getting a lot of attention lately.
Not all of it good.
But the thing about memorable quotes like these intended to stir the souls of a people is the truth often comes to the surface. Which is why thanks to Cynthia Bowen, a Navajo artist, we now have a slogan & hat with, ‘Make America Native Again.’
The slogan as she said was created to serve a point.
While American history has a wealth of inspiring and enduring tales, there are more than a few skeletons in our nation’s closet regarding racial inequality. So when Trump demands that we make America great again, she asks, ‘For whom is he talking about?’
Her slogan, on the other hand, draws greatly from the Native American holocaust endured at the hands of people like Trump who think this is solely their land. But her perspective includes sustainable living, working with the environment and its future in mind, and focusing on the community rather than the individual.
While Bowen has said she’s received some backlash for this (as you can imagine based on the people we are dealing with here in this country), this has been overshadowed by public interest and orders for more of these hats have been sent to her website.
Of the original 12 hats she made, all have been bought by her local community for $30 a piece and with the media attention, there is no doubt she will need to make thousands more.
