A Fresno, CA bar, Brig, did not know what they were getting themselves into when they decided to kick out the only pair of black patrons.
Abre’ Conner and Novella Coleman were expecting to sing a karaoke version of “Waterfalls” by TLC but was then told that they needed to purchase more drinks in order to do such. However, Conner and Coleman had already purchased two drinks and were confused as to why they needed to buy more in order to sing karaoke.
“It was very embarrassing to have people yell at us…while all we really wanted to do was sing our song, ‘Don’t Go Chasing Waterfalls,’” said Conner, who in 2013 was named one of NAACP Legal Defense Fund’s top attorneys under 40.
It was said that a bouncer “body-bumped” Connor, who is just 5″4′, in an attempt to force them out. With all of the commotion going on, the police were called to escort the two women out of the establishment.
“When the police arrived, several customers explained to the officers that the bar staff were enforcing the rule against us only. Some told the police that a one drink rule did not exist. Others even tried to buy us drinks. But the bartenders wouldn’t let them,” they stated.
This sounds too much like when the country still had “colored” sections and racially segregated water fountains. But this happened in March 2016.
The police then ordered them to leave stating that they were trespassing.
