Charges Dropped Against Teen Accused Of Stealing 65-cent Milk Carton From School

In May Ryan Turk was handcuffed, suspended and charged from Graham Park Middle School in Triangle, Virginia.

His crime? Allegedly stealing a 65-cent milk carton from the school’s canteen. He supposedly cut the line and grabbed the carton. However, his mother Shamise told news station WTVR back then that it made no sense as her son was part of a lunch program and was entitled to the milk for free.

He ended up being hit with two misdemeanor charges of disorderly conduct and petit larceny, this was because he tried to conceal the milk (despite being eligible for it).

Ryan says he just forgot to grab the milk cartoon when he first queued up, so he jumped back and just grabbed the carton. Which, seems like sense talking and explains the actions to me!

Still, even if he had stolen it, the police should never had been involved. He could have ended up in a system where things would have just gotten worse and worse for him, all over what would have amounted to an extremely petty crime! And this is all too often the story for young black men!

Ryan’s trial was due to start Thursday, but prosecutors have decided to drop the charges. They did so after talking to the boy’s counselor according to The Washington Post.

Prince William County Commonwealth’s Attorney Paul Ebert told the Post.

“He’s already taken actions to remedy his attitude,”

The whole mess did actually escalate to charged because Ryan’s family refused to step down from the charge which was stemming from an allegation that Ryan pushed against the officer who grabbed him (he didn’t need grabbing). They were offered “nonjudicial punishment,” but decided to fight because they felt he was targeted for being black.

The school tried to say at the time that both the principal and the officer who arrested Ryan are black but Ryan’s mother had an important reponse to that:

She told the Huffington Post:

“People don’t understand, it can still be racism and they handled the whole thing wrong,”

“Also their story is not right and the principal should’ve been doing her job, not the [school resource officer].”
