Since the dawn of time, our people have brought the world advancements from every phase of science you can imagine. Just about everything you know and are aware of have been created, discovered or influenced by our people. This is because we have a long and storied history of knowing and loving science. Well, stories like this might rekindle our souls and get us back into the fields of math, science, engineering and discovery.

Four teenage girls from Africa created a urine powered generator. They are 14 year olds Duro-Aina Adebola, Akindele Abiola, Faleke Oluwatoyin, and 15-year-old Bello Eniola. This is an incredible invention and with the lack of electricity throughout the third world, could be a game changer.

The electricity creating urine powered generator was brought to the Maker Faire Africa, a start up event where inventors, innovators and business people come together from all over the African continent to find the next greatest creations. The great thing about this start up event is the focus on solving immediate challenges and problems of the continent and people. Not only that, many behind the event actually assist and help the creators initiate and promote these inventions.

The great thing about this invention is the fact that it was created by a bunch of teenage girls. Talk about inspiration for the next generation to not only find the issues and challenges facing the community, but dig in a solve them. Who knows what other challenges these young women will take on and solve during their life time.

Urine Powered Generator

Let’s take a moment to focus on the urine powered generator and figure out how it works.

Here’s how it works:

• Urine is put into an electrolytic cell, which cracks the urea into nitrogen, water, and hydrogen.
• The hydrogen goes into a water filter for purification, which then gets pushed into the gas cylinder.
• The gas cylinder pushes hydrogen into a cylinder of liquid borax, which is used to remove the moisture from the hydrogen gas.
• This purified hydrogen gas is pushed into the generator.
• 1 Liter of urine gives you 6 hours of electricity.

Incredible! One liter of urine gives you 6 hours of electricity. This is unbelieveable to me and i’m in awe of these young women. They are definitely on their way to change the world and live some extraordinary lives, while positively impacting the lives of others.

Not exactly sure how this could be rolled out across the country and world, but it is definitely sparking some incredible conversations about what is possible.

With the cost and dangers of creating electricity magnified around the world with Fukushima on our minds, this could be something that leads us in a totally new direction away from fossil fuels. Not to mention, this could give us an alternative to solar power, which some believe can’t be harvested enough just yet in order to get us off of fossil fuels.
