‘Blurred Lines’ Theft: Pharrell & Robin Thicke Ordered To Pay Marvin Gaye’s Family $7.3 Million by Jury

There is nothing like the music of the Marvin Gaye era. It just seems like the music of today doesn’t stack up and that’s why many modern artist are sampling that eras best music.

No one can blame them, but they should own up to it when they do sample another artist music, even if they have passed.

Sampling and copyright infringement are two totally different things. The latter is what Pharrell and Robin Thicke were found guilty of this week by a jury, but can’t say many are surprised by the decision.

An eight person jury reached the verdict after listening to testimony this week. The dispute was over “Blurred Lines” by Pharrell and Thicke copyright infringement of Gaye’s 1977 hit song “Got to Give it Up”.

Pharrell and Thicke denied copying Gaye’s song, but after a quick listen and pairing of the two, many people believe they did copy the music. This assumption was validated by the jury this week.

“Blurred Lines” earned the duo more than $5 million dollars each for their music. Both are credited as song writers on the song, but there was no mention of Gaye’s contribution, which is what landed them in court facing Gaye’s family.
