During Black History Month, we often celebrate the innovations that savvy black inventors have made throughout the years. From the traffic light to the Super Soaker, black people have always used our resourcefulness to make the world a better place. But our inventiveness didn’t stop in the 19th century! We have present day tech entrepreneurs that are discovering ways to change the game and fix issues that many face. For example, meet Thirteen-year-old Ukoma Michael, a Nigerian young man that’s completely changed the way we view electricity.

Ukoma has created a fan that runs for nineteen hours without electricity! That’s right! There’s no need for any plug or electrical outlet! It seems as if this might be the perfect accessory for this summer. The fan might even come in handy right now, as winter has been feeling more like spring this year! Ukoma makes what he calls the Blue Wind Fans from aluminum and wire. He uses old cartons for packaging. The manufacturing of the fans make pricing more affordable and allows the product to be secured by lower income households.

The Blue Wind Fans come in various shapes, sizes and versions, such as “table top” and “free standing”. Ukoma is a technology influencer and the scary part is that he hasn’t even hit his prime yet! He’s not stopping at the creation of electricity-free fans. He aims to start developing engine parts and aircrafts. We see you Ukoma! Keep building! One day, you’ll have a Blue Wind Airplane line!
