It’s refreshing in America to have (partial) justice done quickly and without hesitation. The officer whose arrest of a teen in the Spring Valley High School was filmed and went viral has been fired. The Sheriff never once blinked with calling the actions of the officer unacceptable.
From TheRoot: Ben Fields, the South Carolina school resource officer who was caught on video knocking a female student out of her seat and then throwing her to the ground, has been fired from the Richland County Sheriff’s Department, Sheriff Leon Lott noted in a press conference Wednesday.
Lott said that after reviewing the footage and speaking with officials, he determined that the senior deputy had “violated policy” in tossing the student across the room, and as such had been terminated, according to CBS News.
Why Partial Justice?
The decision and action to terminate this resource officer was the right decision. We are pleased this action was made in a timely manner. However, this is referred to as partial justice because the job isn’t finished. This former officer should be charged with criminal assault.
I’m not a lawyer, so I don’t know the exact legal term…and i’m sure many of you will correct me. Nevertheless, if a parent couldn’t come up to a school and beat up a child like, not even their own child, without being charged with assault and battery or worse, then neither should a police officer. This man was paid to uphold the law, so he should be responsible to it as well beyond losing his job and hopefully his pension.
