Darnell Ferguson has been up and down in his life but today he stands proud as the owner of SuperChef, a very successful Louisville.
Darnell started off life well with what he says were good parents (he puts a lot of credit in his step dad) but he struggled with school and was on the verge of being kicked out. So, like many troubled young men he went over to vocational school where his love of cooking started.
After eventually enrolling in Sullivan University in Louisville KY he wanted to become a top chef. However problems with only having access to partial funding started his woes.
He could only enroll in a few evening course but he kept working through it and eventally managed to get some day course. He excelled and was selected to go to the Beijing Olympics as one of only two African Americans in the 22 strong chef team.
But he was struggling financially and had taken to selling drugs.
After graduation the drug selling continued, arrests came (8 in three months), eviction and homelessness.
His temper and problems holding a job brought trouble despite his skills.
However the young man found god, he also found himself fired and unemployed. But he kept going to church and worked on securing funding for his own restaurant.
After a year of unemployment and when his investors disappeared the man was left with nothing. But he was stronger than before and kept positive.
A man he knew operated a restaurant at lunch and dinner and offered him the breakfast slot for his own “pop up” restaurant.
Finally, it was a success and he went onto run three successful pop ups.
NOW at just 28 years old, the story has come to it’s current place and as his was always dubbed “Super Chef” he finally opened his own full service restaurant. High end food in a relaxed setting.
SuperChefs is located in St. Mathews at 106 Fairfax Ave, Louisville, KY 40207
