If you are looking for a positive black doll for your kids other than a big brand Mattel #AvaBarbie then look no further than Queens of Africa.
Back in 2007 43 year-old Taofick Okoya was faced with the issue that he could not find a black doll in the stores as a present for his neice. So, the entrepreneaur decided to do what any good businessman who sees a gap in the market does. He created his own!
However Okoya didn’t just copy Barbie though. He decided to create a doll that was based on the traditions of his country. Recreating a natural skin color and using outfits from the major tribes he created a doll that young Nigerian girls could relate too.
And guess what, now in Nigeria Queens of Africa outsell Barbie. Reuters reported that they are shifting around 9k units per month, 15% of the Nigerian toy market!
To add to that orders are now coming in for the doll from all over the world.
The dolls can be purchased in USA from http://www.slicebycake.com
And on Amazon you can find empowering Queens of Africa books:
