Pytliak Josie Ajak, a woman of South Sudanese origin, works as a barista and manager at Gloria Jean´s coffee shop in Cairns, Australia.
One day in October 2016, a white older disabled woman came to the shop and refused Ajak´s services. The woman demanded she be served by a white person.
So Ajak moved aside with a smile and continued to serve the other customers. Meanwhile, she told her staff, that the woman was a racist and that she would not be served.
Ajak and her colleagues continued to serve the other customers which resulted in the racist costumer leaving filled with an anger. The whole story was published on the social sites by Ajak´s friend and coworker who celebrated her reaction and expressed her proudness about Ajak as a friend and how she handled the situation as a manager.
“When I came into work after it happened, the whole store was decorated with signs saying we don’t support racism and shirts with the hashtag, #NoTimeForRacism,” Ajak said in an interview. Community support can go a long way especially when it’s so much easier to turn a blind eye to ignorance and racism.
