Black Artist Dethrones Warhol With Record Breaking $110.5M Sale

Jean-Michel Basquiat, the legendary New York graffiti artist, who helped bring graffiti into the mainstream in the 1980s and who turned the art world on it’s head has broken a record as a painting of a skull by him sells at auction for $110.5 million.

Sadly Basquiat passed away in 1988 so he doesn’t get to see his Warhol dethroning record!

The Sotheby’s New York makes him top-selling American artist at auction ever! Only Warhol and Francis Bacon have previously had pieces sold at over $100m.
