African American names are becoming more and more common according to a study written by two Texas A&M University professors and published in “Ethnic and Racial Studies.”.
And apparently this rise has happened since Obama gained top spot in the White House.
An excerpt from the study wrote “As the Office of President is held up as the dream occupation for all Americans, the election of an African American president certainly provides an opportunity to ‘bask,'”.
The study looked at 120 black women and it was found that the election of Obama made them feel more proud of their heritage.
Historically African American sounding names such as Shaquille and Shaquanda were seen as lower-class black names but the study found that more and more middle class families are embracing these names and their African Americanness.
This is good news, right?
