It seems that even if you want the police to kill you they won’t, if you are white…. At least that’s how it seems after this crazy story that saw closed street and a school lock down in Columbia. So what on earth happened?

Reports are coming in that a man threatened police with a gun, he also threatened his family and himself. The gun was a replica that police said looked “nearly identical” to a semi-automatic pistol.

Early Monday morning a 911 call came in saying that 42-year-old James Andrew Schueler, of Columbia, Maryland was threatening to kill some family members and threatening to commit suicide by cop.

Police responded around 7.30am and a stand off began.

The standoff was serious and dangerous enough to cause Long Reach High School and roads in the area to be shut down.

Eventually a policeman shot Schueler in the torso, he received immediate treatment and was taken to to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center. He is in a serious, but stable condition.

Of course, it’s good in many ways that police did not kill another man, no matter what color he is, but he did threaten a lot of people and with an object that was dangerous even if it was not a genuine semi-automatic pistol. Many men have been shot by police for far less, or even nothing.

This story seems ridiculous in light of recent events and African Americans can’t be blamed for questioning if the color of this man was the reason he was not gunned down on sight.

Surely this is how the police should be handling every situation?
