Here we go again! Yet, another school shooting took place at a college in Florida in the wee hours on Thursday morning.
Students of Florida State University received a message from the FSU emergency alert system reading “*FSU ALERT! Dangerous Situation! Main Campus – Tallahassee. Seek shelter immediately, away from doors and windows.”
3 people were shot by the lone gunman, and dozens of others scrambled to safety and barricaded themselves in rooms. Some students sent messages to their parents saying “shooter on campus, I love you”. Cell phone video captured police leading students to safety.
Tallahassee police killed the gunman after a shoot out occurred. The police statement said, “He was challenged by the officers and given commands to drop his weapon, but the male fired at the officers. The officers returned fire, killing the gunman.”
Classes are cancelled today, and police continue their investigation and are interviewing witnesses. FSU Police Chief David Perry spoke at a press conference along with the Tallahassee police chief Michael DeLeo, but no information was given about a possible motive.
Students live-tweeted their experiences, including details about cops pointing their rifles, and students being led out of the library with their hands up. One student tweeted pictures of the abandoned library, with coffee cups and laptops left on the table.
School shootings continue to be a major issue across the country, evoking strong emotions regarding the Second Amendment. The country, as a whole, remains divided regarding the goals and legislation restricting access to guns. Many are also upset regarding coverage of said events, because the media continues to make the shooters infamous, running their names, pictures, and background stories on a constant loop.
The identity of the shooter has not been released at the time of this post, and we will not glorify the shooter in any way.
