Yet another black man ends up in the morgue after a deadly encounter with police. Tawon Boyd of Baltimore called the police asking for medical assistance and for that he was literally beaten to death. The family’s attorney, Latoya Francis-Williams, reported that Boyd made the call requesting an ambulance because he was feeling disoriented and wanted to be taken to the hospital.
The police say he was uncooperative and was described by one of the officers as “confused and paranoid”. It was assumed that he was possibly high. One officer said Boyd believed his girlfriend drugged him.
The next question would be, with this knowledge why did five officers beat a 5’5”, 150 pound man? How many officers does it take to subdue a man of this size? Are trained law enforcement officials not able to assess what a real threat is?
Linda Burch, Boyd’s 51 year-old grandmother, witnessed the encounter and told The Associated Press, “They kept on grabbing on him and holding him down, and he started screaming, ‘Grandma, Grandma, they’re going to kill me.”
After Boyd’s encounter with the police he was taken to the hospital where he later died. No charges have been filed, Boyd’s police encounter is still under investigation. The identity of the officers involved has also been withheld.
Unless police officers are forced to take responsible for their irresponsible actions innocent black men will continue to be murdered by police. In America we are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Another black man lost his life at the hands of the police as our judicial system does nothing to hold rogue police accountable. We have given officers a license to kill with no intention of ever revoking it.
