As the Rio 2016 Olympics nears its end, the African continent is shining bright with gold medals thanks to our hardworking sportsmen and sportswomen. Despite having limited resources to train, African athletes have gone forth to make their marks on the our continent and abroad.
Their outstanding displays at the ongoing Olympic Games have earned the continent respect and made every African proud. Here are the African athletes who have won gold medals in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Wayne Van Niekerk (South Africa)
Born July 1992 in Cape Town, South Africa, Wayne Van Niekerk is a South African track and field athlete specializing in men’s 200m and 400m races. He is the world record holder, world champion, and Olympic champion in the men’s 400m race. Van Niekerk won the gold medal during this year’s Men’s 400m race at Rio, setting a new world record of 43.03 seconds.
