“Anyone that’s trying to do something to improve sound… that’s all good.”
-Dr. Dre
For the past couple of weeks, the world has waited for the announcement that would crown gangster rap pioneer Dr. Dre the covenant “Hip-Hop Cash King”. However, there was a major hold up in progress. From what it seemed, many people didn’t want to see the music legend sign the multi-billion dollar deal. Well-respected publications like Forbes immediately went to work on establishing that Dr. Dre, in fact, wouldn’t become the new black billionaire he gets his cut and taxes are taken out.
Many people were still astonished that Dr. Dre was getting an upwards of $800 million from this deal. That’s not a small amount of money in any way, shape or form! So, ironically, the public’s focus was shifted to the short one minute and twenty-three second video where Dr. Dre and Tyrese prematurely announced to the world that he would be the next billionaire. Many people cited that Dre was exhibiting behavior that’s unbecoming of a music mogul of his stature. Others also said that he very well could’ve caused the deal to fall through by boasting about the deal to the public when Apple likes to do their business in secrecy.
It seemed like many were hoping it would cause things to backfire…….
Nevertheless, it was announced today that Apple finalized the deal and acquired Beats Music and Beats Electronics for $3.2 billion dollars. It was also announced that Jimmy Iovine left his position at Interscope, effective immediately. We should send our fair wishes and positive energy to Dr. Dre for his new endeavor with Apple. It’s always great to see brothers making moves. But, let’s not get into a superficial debate on what he should do with the money or if he’s a sell-out or not. There are major lessons to be learned from this ordeal!
First, Dr. Dre was totally in the wrong for publicly boasting about a deal that his company hadn’t even signed on for yet. That very well could’ve messed things up for everyone involved. Any black man in America that has assumed any kind of power, wealth or influence is seen as public enemy number one. The billionaire club is usually reserved for technology wizards and natural resource tycoons that are overwhelmingly Caucasian in their racial origin. His drunken stupor ignited unwarranted attention on him.
Then, he gave the world (and any competitors) a sneak peek at what’s in store for both the Beats brand and Apple. You can imagine that companies like Windows, Sony and Samsung are in the process of developing ways to make a power move in their creative space. That’s grounds to back out of a deal right there! What happened to anonymity when it came to business? You can’t tell the world your every move. That’s how you lose in the long run!
So Dr. Dre could’ve went down in history for blowing one of the most polarizing business acquisitions in recent memory, all because he couldn’t keep his mouth shut about what his next move was. Let this be a lesson to everyone from entrepreneurs to authors and journalists. There are just certain things folks just can’t know. At least wait until the time is right!
I would like to send my personal congratulations to Dr. Dre for achieving this major milestone. Let’s not act like he hasn’t been putting in work to get to this position for over twenty years. He’s given me something, as a young entrepreneur, to aspire towards. Why can’t I become a billionaire off the book industry? However when I become the next Tyler Perry or the black James Patterson and get my big payout no one is going to know until my money is guaranteed. Bet that!
