We are always asking for positive images and media in our community. Well, here is some wonderful footage you should love as black fathers get out to support the kids and welcome them back to school on the first day.
The event occurred at the Lucy Craft Laney Elementary School in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It was the vision of a north minneapolis community activist, KG Wilson. All around hard working men took time out of their day to not only show their children they will be there for them, but also to let all the children of the school know they are there for them as well.
This community suffers with 99% of the children in this area living at or below the poverty line. Many of the children have never seen their fathers, but the things are beginning to change because of Wilson’s passion, dedication and love for his community.
The men gathered in the front of the school entrance forming a tunnel leading to the school doors. They clapped and cheered as children walked through the tunnel giving them high fives and encouragement along the way telling the children this is going to be their best year ever.
The didn’t stop at just cheers and positive feelings. They also passed out school supplies, book bags and more to the children who are in much need of assistance from those willing and able. In addition, the men have vowed to mentor the children in the school throughout the year.
It is a wonderful and beautiful sight to see with your eyes as black men set the tone for a wonderful school year for the kids. The energy level was high. The enthusiasm for school and learning was there. And with any luck, they will be able to maintain that energy and participation all year.
The black community is constantly bombarded with negative images about who we are as a people, how black men are not involved, and we are killing one another. This truly wonderful to experience something like this happening at one of our schools.
In fact, this should become a ritual or challenge for all schools in our community around the country. Black men stand up and show your children we support them in their endeavors to gain an outstanding education and it starts on the first day of school.
Check out the video. Please, share it with everyone you know. And let’s start a positive movement in our community.
