I’m sure many of you have heard the saying or since we are in modern times, read the memes that says, “it’s called the American Dream because you’d have to be asleep to fall for it!” I was once guilty of semi wanting that dream. You know, go to college, get as many degrees as you can. Buy a home, and what’s the dream without having that nice luxury car. Many people don’t realize that the American dream is only designed to keep you in debt and make banks rich off of this illusion of what we call money.
Student loan debit
According to Forbes, There is currently 1.2 trillion dollars Worth of student loan debt out there. Only 40 Percent of people work in the fields that they have degrees in. Though African American woman make up the most largest population in college in this country and though I’m proud because I have 2 degrees myself, I also wonder if the other groups know something that we as black women saw last.
1) That having a degree doesn’t guarantee you success or a secure job. 2) having a degree doesn’t mean you are educated. We are about to have a society and a community full of women with degrees with no jobs possibly still depending on the system to survive, with student loan debt. Instead of promoting just education we should promote OWNERSHIP. We need to promote owning our own businesses and becoming producers of the items we consume.
The black hair industry is a billion dollar a year industry but yet we don’t make the perms that we put in our hair. We don’t even produce the chemist to test these products. Now I know a few women that create their own natural hair products, their biggest complaint is that people complain about their prices. First off everything cheap isn’t good secondly if these people are hand making the product they have to be compensated for the time and effort third why are we willing to pay to put chemicals in our hair that we can’t even pronounce.
Most blacks love to eat meat, but yet we are no longer farming, now don’t get me wrong, I know we have black farmers but what is the rate of black farmers to black consumers? We complain about an unfair justice system, but are we producing judges and attorneys as well as law makers? Are we overall producing those that can help us in an unjust justice system? Are we opening our own grocery stores, movie theaters, banks, clothing stores. We are huge consumers and are the last to produce. So let’s produce less student loan debt and less consumers and more producers.
Buying a home
Now everyone wants to own their own home. Not knowing the illusion of owning their own home. One IS NOT a home owner as long as they are paying a mortgage. I’m not hating, this is the simple reality. The “BANK” owns that home and from 20-30 years you will be paying the bank sometimes double the amount the worth to get the home from the bank. I’ve seen so many people go knee deep into debt to get a home just to say that’s what they did, to say they are accomplishing this “American Dream.” Now what we should be teaching is not owning a home but owning property. There are several homes that are in inner cities starting as low as $3,000. Instead of getting a $200,000 loan get a $3000 loan buy this house, fix the home up and rent it out. Do this a few times then you can afford to actually own your own home. Become owners of property not owners of a 20-30 year debt.
Luxury cars
Everyone wants to ride in luxury! But everyone can’t afford it. I was sent to Japan and I didn’t see not ONE Lexus or infinity. They rode around in the regular Toyotas and Nissans. It’s actually genius of them to know that in this country we like to keep up with the Jones. In Japan a Camry is the exact same as a Lexus, but in the states, we will pay 15,000 extra dollars as Kanye West once said just to say shorty you ain’t up on this, just to have that Lexus symbol on our car. But when my Camry breaks down and your Lexus breaks down, we get the same parts but guess who pays more? You do!
Not saying there is anything wrong with any of these. But when you LEARN better you DO better. Let’s start making better decision. Let’s start producing more and consuming less!
