This Can Save The Black Community

Having been around UI for a few years now, I can tell when subject is going to stir the pot a bit. This one here about marriage and the black community definitely will when the answer seems to be an obvious yes to so many.

The difference is because there are a strong contingency in the black, conscious community that cannot stand the very idea of marriage. They are not against the union of people in the effort to raise a strong, healthy family and community, but so-called Euro-centric, patriarchal form of marriage that seem to be practiced in modern times.

My thoughts are to let each be their own because. Honestly, I don’t know any other form of relationship between men and women, but respect the fact that if you want to have 7 wives, then that is your business….not mine.

Happy Newlyweds in Front of MansionI was raised in a mother, father household, so obviously I have a bias or affinity to this form of union. And when you start to look at the statistics in this country of where the issues with our preschool to prison pipeline begins it all comes back to broken homes and no structure in the family or community.

I’m not trying to throw all single moms or dads under the bus. Obviously, there is a clear white power, supremacy structure in place in this country and world that is largely contributing to this outcome. However, there are some things we need to start address  on our own and marriage, building of the community are some of the things we can control.

Black Marriage Day

There is a man in Columbus, GA that believes marriage is the key to saving our communities as well. He started the “Black Marriage Day” in an effort to build stronger communities four years ago and is still going strong with his initiative.

“The focus on black marriage is because we want to cherish the marriages of yesteryear, celebrate the marriages of today and encourage healthy marriages and relationships for tomorrow,” he said. “The focus is because our community is disintegrating right in front of our eyes because of the lack of marriage and the family foundation.

“When you look at our prison population, we find that most of the crimes are committed by people that come from single-family households where their parents never married,” he added. “And we feel that if we focus on having more families, there will be an outcome of children doing better in school and less behavior problems.”

When you look at the facts, it seems like a duel household consisting of a father and mother is best for the growth of children. As they say, numbers don’t lie, but I understand they can be bent to tell a particular story.

Well, this story is screaming we need more fathers inside the home in order to provide our children with a proper balance, lessons, and access to both mom and dad. Marriage seems to be the best way to do this.
