Officials announced Thursday that Bill Taggart, interim Morehouse College president, has passed away.

Taggart was appointed in April amid internal problems at the historic institution which prompted the firing of former president John Wilson. The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that an autopsy will be conducted later on today. So far, it’s being said that that he passed away from a brain aneurysm.

Taggart is a Howard University alumnus and former president and CEO of Atlanta Life Financial Company. He joined Morehouse’s administration in July 2015, serving as the chief operating officer, with executive oversight of the school’s fundraising operations. The Board of Directors for Morehouse released this statement.

We are deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Bill Taggart, a beloved colleague, father and friend. For the past two years, Bill devoted himself wholeheartedly to Morehouse College.

We are eternally grateful for his loyal support, counsel and the leadership he provided to students, faculty and alumni.

Throughout his tenure, Bill had a positive impact on Morehouse College and the Greater Atlanta Business Community. He leaves behind a long legacy of compassion, integrity and devotion.”

Please keep Morehouse and the AUC and HBCU community in your thoughts and prayers.
