It has taken quite some time but contaminated pipes are finally being replaced in Flint, Michigan. Over 18,000 pipes throughout the city are due to be replaced and the city accepted a bid from a black-owned, female-owned construction to help with this multi-million dollar project. Not only is W.T. Stevens Construction black and female owned, it is a local business as well.
“This is home for me and my family, and I was not going to sit back and do nothing as a person or as a businessman,” project manager Jeff Grayer told the Network Journal. “This is the biggest project our company has ever done and as a result of the water line contract, our gross revenues have increased by about 70 percent.”
The 25 year-old family owned business is now run by the vice president, Rhonda Grayer, whose father started the business. The family is proud to help with this project and work towards rebuilding this community which was harshly affected by water contamination.
