After school officials completed embarrassed a young African American student by asking her to tame her natural hair, her parents took action.
Our hair defies gravity, so to say the least we’re dope. So you can imagine how baffled 16 year-old, junior at Montverde Academy, Nicole Orr felt when school officials asked her to change her hair.
“People say they love my hair because it’s so diverse, curly and Afro-centric,” Nicole said.
She’s actually known for her hair and her parents encourage her to love herself the way she is.
After being notified about the “problem” her parents took action. First reading the dress code policy and reading the policy the school said their daughter violated, they realized it actually singles out black students.
“It said ‘dread-like’ hair and so that could be ambiguous and it could give you latitude to target a certain person or a certain group so we felt we needed to address the issue,” her father, Eric Orr explained.
So her parents set up a meeting with the headmaster to discuss the discriminatory policy in the school’s handbook. To which the headmaster, Dr. Kasey Kesselring agreed the dreadlock restrictions should be eliminated to avoid ostracizing a specific race or ethnicity.
