We often assume that most kids’ only job is to go to school and get good grades, that’s not hard right? If your only job is to go to school and get good grades then you should be success. What some of us don’t realize is some children live in poverty. Some kids go to school hungry every day.
Some kids are living without electricity, without heat. And some are even homeless.
One principal did come to this realization and made it his business to make sure his students were not hungry and had access to hot water to shower and clean clothes to wear.
“I don’t want to go to work if I don’t have clean clothes, I don’t want to go to work if I wasn’t able to shower,” Principal Greg Maughan told Fox13. Although many do not understand, Mr. Maughan does. Your mind will drift, you become self-conscious and lose focus thinking about wear your next meal is coming from or if you have odor.
Mr. Maughan is helping his students in a big way. At Salt Lake City’s East High School officials said homelessness is a major issue. It is estimated to affect approximately 100 of their students.
“It’s to feel like they fit in, to feel like they are part of something, and they don’t stand out. And the more likely they are to attend, the more likely they are to succeed in class, to graduate and to move on to college and a career.”
Chapman-Richards Cares, a local non-profit group, donated the washing machine. Now the school has two wash rooms, with a shower and a washing machine and dryer with unlimited access.
The school also has a food pantry!
